Natural Duwancho
Gatta Farm is the place where we run a dedicated specialty program. Daye Bensa’s Gatta Farm is at the heart of Shantawene Village, in Sidama Bensa, Ethiopia. It sits at an altitude of 2120 – 2210m in the midst of a natural forest. The site is surrounded by indigenous trees, which are older than 100 years, waterfalls, and rivers. Gatta Farm has been named after a waterfall which crosses the farm.
Daye Bensa’s Gatta Farm isn’t only a farm, it consists of a drying station, a lodge and a training facility. During harvesting season, the drying station becomes active and also offers accommodations for employees or trainees until the training has ended. The training facility offers training in coffee processing for interested individuals.
Our Duwancho Lot is sourced from the adjacent Bombe Village.
The cherry delivered there grows between 1920 and 2020 meter above sea level. The beans are very dense, with heavy concentrations of the smaller screen sizes (the majority of the coffee screen sizes at 13-14) which reflects slow maturation at higher altitudes.
Natural Duwancho is made from well selected, ripe cherry. The cherry is floated upon reception to remove any low quality cherry. The cherry is then dried on African beds for 14 to 18 days. The cherries are locally hulled into unsorted natural beans, and then transported to Addis for final sorting.
